The Hui Programme - feature about Tracy Karanui-Golf

We were immensly proud this week to watch one of our amazing SLTs profiled on national media.Tracy Karanui-Golf's (Te Rarawa) journey into speech-language therapy and the work she does in the justice system were profiled on The Hui Programme this week. Tracy is a Māori speech-language therapist and communication assistant within the Talking Trouble whānau. She was interviewed in the episode about her work and her talent and passion shone through so clearly. The programme also featured an interview with a rangatahi and his whānau  about their experiences of the communciation involved in the justice system, and the role Tracy played in his legal matters. The Hui Programme episode was broadcast via the internet on the 31 May 2021 and is available to watch here: https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/new-zealand/2021/05/livestream-the-hui-monday-may-31.htmlTracy is one of only a small group of indigenous speech-language therapists in Aotearoa and there are even fewer working within the justice system. This needs to change. We are hoping that Tracy's story will inspire other Māori to consider speech-language therapy as a career.Tracy plays a critical role within the Talking Trouble team where she has dedicated time to develop Māori strategy and to support the team to explore how we can develop better ways of working for whānau Māori and better honour our Te Tiriti O Waitangi commitments. Tracy has developed Tuatahi Hikoi modules that our team are working through to help us recognise the impact that Aotearora's colonised history and racism has had on Māori and consider how these directly relate to the work we do. She has helped the team explore tools such as The Meihana Model and Hui Process and apply these to our work so we can we interact with the people we work with and the recommendations we make. Tracy and others in the team are looking forward to presenting about this work to the New Zealand Speech-language Therapists' (NZSTA) National Conference later this year.We are so lucky to have Tracy working with us, and we are glad that others got to hear about her amazing skills. Huge thanks to The Hui team, especially John Boynton for his patience as we worked through the processes required to record this programme. And finally, huge thanks for Tracy for being prepared to tackle media stardom!
