Communication Needs of Vulnerable Children and Young People: Are we doing enough?

Children and young people with communication difficulties are, by definition, vulnerable. Communication difficulties may be their primary presenting condition, and this affects their functioning and their future in all aspects of their lives. However communication difficulties are also found with very high frequency in other populations of children and young people identified as vulnerable, such as those with social and emotional difficulties, behavioural difficulties (or all three), those coming from poverty and social disadvantage, and those already in contact with the justice system. This makes “communication needs in vulnerable children and young people” a very large issue for society to deal with. This talk will review what we know now. It will present the current evidence on the language and communication needs of vulnerable children and young people and our understanding of their needs and developmental trajectories. It will discuss theoretical issues of how associated language and communication is with later social, emotional and behavioural difficulties. Last but not least, it will tackle the implications of how much we understand about the needs of these individuals in relation to the provision currently offered.Register here: https://www.eventbrite.co.nz/e/communication-needs-of-vulnerable-children-and-young-people-are-we-doing-enough-dr-judy-clegg-tickets-19322718772

2. Workshop for speech-language therapists

Auckland, New Zealand | University of Auckland, Tamaki Campus
Friday, 11 December 2015 at 9:00 AM (NZDT)

Language and social disadvantage: Is there an effective model of intervention?

We now know much more about the language and communication development of children who grow up in a context of significant social disadvantage including the longer term trajectories of early language impoverishment. Yet, how to intervene effectively with this population continues to be a challenge. This presentation will discuss the challenges of designing, delivering and evaluating language communication interventions for children and young people who live in significant areas of social disadvantage. In particular, it will discuss the pertinent issues of identifying and establishing effectiveness across universal, targeted and specialist interventions. The presentation will draw on research completed to date highlighting the challenges that still need to be addressed. Case studies of children of a range of ages, practical examples, activities and videos will be used.SLTs can register here: https://www.eventbrite.co.nz/e/language-and-social-disadvantage-dr-judy-clegg-workshop-for-slts-tickets-18709465515
